New & Noteworthy ...

Welcome to Chris Renny, who has been appointed Director of the O.R.H.A. Board, and is also our new Fundraising and Sponsorship Chair

The Board is also grateful to Michelle Mahabir for stepping up to join the Sired Stakes Committee, to Kerri Marsolais for volunteering to assist with the Show Committee and to Jane Lyon for participating in the Strategic Planning Committee. It takes a lot of hands and minds to make this Association run well, so all participation is appreciated. Thank you.

Congratulations to Loris Epis for winning the Pards' saddle at the Year-end Awards Banquet on November 7, 2009.

President’s Message

The O.R.H.A. 2009 show season is officially over - the year-end awards banquet is now behind us, with only the Oklahoma Futurity and Affiliate Finals remaining.

And what a great season it was - some outstanding horses and memorable runs, terrific camaraderie and great sportsmanship.

So many “special mentions” come to mind, but I hate to overlook someone by highlighting particular individuals. I will, however, thank all the show hosts and show managers, the show office staff, the scribes and people who manned the gate, the announcers, and all who stepped up to the plate to help out in any way.

Our committee Chairs (Ken and Dana Van Alstine, Harvey Stevens, John Fletcher, Dan and Bernice Fletcher) and their many committee members also deserve special mention. All of these people work so hard behind the scenes to ensure our shows take place and that things run smoothly.

And let’s not forget your Board of Directors – Ken Van Alstine, Mike Munroe, Harvey Stevens, Wendy Dyer, Brian Stewart, John Purdie, Rosemary Hilbert, Dave Alexander, Mary Jo MacDonnell and Joanne Milton – who put in more hours than many members realise, and also India Hathaway who keeps our website fresh and up-to-date. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for all you do on behalf of the O.R.H.A.

And finally, thank YOU - the members - for your support and participation, and for making the O.R.H.A. the BEST equestrian organization out there.

See you at the A.G.M. on February 14, 2010 and in the meantime remember, if you ain’t slidin, you ain’t riding!

Best wishes to you and your family.
Carol Ivey

A Great ORHyA Show Season!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a great 2009 show season!

Thanks to all the Youth who worked so hard this year, not only to show their horse but to work before and after to raise funds for the Youth programs. Special thanks to the three hard working girls who helped make my job much easier, Vice President Melia Blakely, Secretary Taylor Mariani and Past President Rebecca McAtee. Funds raised by the Youth go to Year End Awards, Varsity Club and the Education Fund.

Special Thanks to all the show Managers who allowed the Youth to hold their Fundraisers at the shows. Your support for the ORHA Youth is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to all who met this year’s goals!
Best of Luck to all going forward in the years to come!

And the Winner is…
The draw for the western print the Youth were raffling off was made at the banquet Saturday November 7, 2009. The lucky recipient was Cindy Steele from Kingston, ON. Congratulations!

Thanks to everyone who purchased a ticket and supported the ORHA Youth. Special thanks to Molly Stevens who not only donated the print, she was also the photographer and the designer. What an awesome job!

Enjoy the picture Cindy!

President’s Message

Show season is now behind us for another year, and all that is left now is the year-end Awards Banquet, and memories of shared fun, accomplishments and missteps.  And of course, anticipation for what next year will bring.

Thank you to everyone who made the shows such a success – Mike and Sam Munroe, always there to man the gate or help out wherever they could, Catherine and Wayne Blakely, our perennial scribes, Joanne Milton and her team for making sure the office ran smoothly and the judges were taken care of, Allan Barnes and all our other announcers, the generous show hosts and show managers, the various clinicians and those who organised the great clinics, our Committee Chairs and members of those committees, and the many others who worked so hard behind the scenes to make sure things ran smoothly.  You are all unsung heroes and I thank you.

And thank you to the OR.H.A. Board of Directors for all their hard work, ensuring we each have the opportunity to enjoy this great sport.

Over the Winter months, I ask you to please consider how you might become more involved with the O.R.H.A. -  we need member participation.  Perhaps you could join a Committee, scribe or help with the gate, or write some articles.

We also need your ideas, along with personal updates, for inclusion in the Slider or The Rider, so please send along anything you might have to president@orha.on.ca

And remember, members are welcome to attend the monthly Board meetings, so please watch the website for information on upcoming meetings, or email me (or one of the Directors) for details.

I wish each and every one of you the very best for the Winter season, and look forward to seeing you all at the Annual General Meeting on February 14.
